the broadneck japan club organizes cultural activities and student exchange programs between our school and sagami-ohno high school in kanagawa, japan (our unofficial "sister school"). it's a relatively new club - we just started in the fall of 2008. about 20 broadneck students went on an exchange trip to japan in the summer of 2008. we spent a few days sightseeing in tokyo, a week as exchange students living with students of sagami-ohno high school, and another few days in hakone. this school year, we are hosting japanese students - 22 students and 2 teachers will be spending a week with us starting march 13. unfortunately, due to lack of interest, there may not be a trip to japan this summer. however, if a significant number of people voice interest (we certainly hope this will happen!), we will take another trip to japan in june of 2009. we plan to continue this pattern, and host japanese students in the spring of 2010, as well as organize another trip to japan in june of 2010. during our meetings, we spend a good deal of time planning the trip to japan and the week that the japanese students visit annapolis. we also spend a lot of time discussing and studying japanese culture. there is plenty to do for students who don't plan to travel to japan or host japanese students - we have parties at which we eat japanese food, we have ddr and guitar hero tournaments, and we stay in contact with students at sagami-ohno through a pen-pal program. in the past, we've also had japanese teachers from the community college come and teach us japanese. clubs at broadneck participate in a hallway-decorating competition for the homecoming festivities, so this is our biggest concern in the fall! our hallway this year was a great success, and we won first place! our meetings are also simply a place for people who love japan to come and share their love of the culture. although we make an effort to separate ourselves from the anime club (we believe there is much more to japan than anime!), we welcome people who are anime fans but would like to learn more about japanese culture.
