Robotics Club (Supervisor: John Leitner)
Description: The Broadneck Robotics Club uses various mechanical and computer skills to build robots that will perform many physical tasks on obstacle courses. Members of the club use their skills to compete in the F.I.R.S.T. Robotics regional and national competitions. We also work in partnership with Severn High School, St. Mary's High School, and Severna Park High School. All of these schools cooperate with the U.S. Naval Academy. The Midshipmen in the engineering department at the USNA, along with their professors, help the students to design and build a robot for the competition in March. We begin by building and designing a small version of our robot at our respective high schools. The robot we build is from a kit called "Robot Builder" and is Developed by Carnegie Mellon and the National Robotics Engineering Consortium specifically for FIRST. Then, on January 7th, we attend a kickoff event and find out what the task of our robot will be in this years competition. We then have exactly 6 week to design, program, and construct a robot that will complete the skills needed to score the most points in competition. This is not Battle Bots! The idea behind the competition is "gracious professionalism", which simply means that all teams work together to have fun and learn as much as possible. If you would like to learn more about the competition and the FIRST organization, please log-on to the FIRST site below
